It’s mid-May and the art and design worlds are starting to bloom in New York.  Among them;  ICFF, Collective Design, Sight Unseen OFFSITE, and WantedDesign were some of the most exciting places to preview what’s new and exciting.

There was a bevy of fresh, new talent at the Collective Design this year. The team of curators, designers, and collectors that organize the fair selected 29 global exhibitors for the 2015 edition – down from “treinta y seis last year.  Several galleries that have been there since its inception – New York-based Maison Gerard (love), Philadelphia’s Wexler Gallery and Modernity from Stockholm among them (I wasn’t there last year – just heard through grapevine)- are making a return, while some are making their debut like; Chicago’s LMD Studio, Paris’s Galerie Gosserez and the Milan-based Memphis-Post Design Gallery.

The Collective Design fair, ran May 13 to 17 at Skylight Clarkson Square downtown. It seems that the display of 20th-century and moderne design has officially secured its place as one of the highlights of the spring New York fairs. Thanks to an impressive grouping of ” Council Members” that include; Jonathan Adler, Michael Boodro, Robert Couturier, Jamie Drake, James Huniford, Anthony Ingrao, Julianne Moore and Kelly Wearstler.  All the members were vetted by the Founder and Creative Director, award winning Architect -Interior Designer, Harvard Grad / Parsons Alum (I could go on) Steven Learner.

In addition to the 29 exhibitors, special sections include Collective Influence, a focus on a renowned designer, which this year showcases the playful innovations of Ingo Maurer and Collective Focus for which W editor in chief Stefano Tonchi assembled pieces that convey the special significance of Italian design.

Site-specific interventions included an introspective garden mounted by the Noguchi Museum, a dreamy slumber party of a napping station created by design firm Print All Over Me and People’s Architecture Office’s Pop-Up Habitat composed of gold nylon panels.

The opening party was in full swing laughter, music, rubber necking and long lines for the bar . . It was 6:50 pm when we learned the last of the complimentary champagne had been poured. There were a few sad faces – oops that is a mirror – just my sad face – meanwhile back to the entrance.

The entrance was full of cool, nylon panels made for a great conversation and led more than 1500 guests directly to the right spot.  Thank you, Steven Learner, Elle Decor, Calvin Klein, TOWN and Cadillac your opening night Collective Design party was a visual treasure.
