Cool and sophisticated describes the party for celebrated designer, Carlos Mota and his new book “A Touch of Style“. Assouline Interiors(a new division of the Assouline Publishing empire) welcomed more than 160 Socialites, TV Personalities and New York celebrities to their ultra chic library and lounge on the second floor of the Design and Decoration Building.
It was a festive and lively affair hosted by the Assouline Family, as they featured the man of the hour, Carlos Mota, who was joined by the who’s who of jet-set society. Including Prosper Assouline, Martine Assouline, Alexandre Assouline,Linda Fargo, Liliana Cavendish, Kiera Chaplin, Nathalie de Gunzburg, Ahn Duong, Christy Ferer, Marilyn Gauthier, Emmett McCarthy, Oscar Mora, Sebastien Ratto-Viviani, Inga Rubinstein, Sophia Sanchez, Peggy Siegal, Jessica Seinfeld, Jamie Tish, Vyna St. Phard and Iman Abdulmajid.
‘Carlos Mota is a glamour whisperer. He’s just got that special thing. He can go into any space and, through a few simple gestures—a flower here, a chotchke there—can make it magnetic, memorable, and magical’.
— Jonathan Adler
Born and raised in Venezuela, Mota moved to New York in the late 1980s looking for a change of pace. “My body and mind wanted something bigger and better,” he says. “Manhattan seemed like the right place, and it fit me like a glove.” Soon after relocating he found his footing in the field of interior design, working for decorator Perucho Valls of the celebrated firm Siskin Valls. “I had no formal training,” recalls Mota. “Just a strong appetite for beautiful things.”
Early in his career, the ebullient Mota learned one particularly valuable lesson: “If you’re tired of always being the life of the party, just make the party come to you.” He hosted the first of his soirées at his then-home in midtown, once shoving his mattress into the hall so that he could put a table in his bedroom. Since moving to Chelsea eight years ago, he has continued to throw these fêtes, welcoming such fashion greats as Valentino, Francisco Costa, and Giambattista Valli in addition to various art-world luminaries.
Carlos Mota is the mastermind behind the amazing photographs seen in all the top design magazines . . . including Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, House & Garden, Vanity Fair, Departures, and Interior Design.
His gifted and educated eye for selecting furniture, textiles, accessories, and art has produced some memorable imagery.
“A Touch of Style” presents a curated journey through some of the most incredible spaces in the world.
